Bill Hicks performing for his first video, Sane Man, in Austin, Texas in 1989. en.wikipedia.org William Melvin Hicks was an American stand-up comedian in the 1980s and early 1990s. He challenged mainstream beliefs, aiming to “enlighten people to think for themselves.” Hicks used a ribald approach to express his material, describing himself as “Chomsky with dick jokes.” His jokes included general discussions about society, religion, politics, philosophy and personal issues. Hicks’ material was often deliberately controversial and steeped in black comedy. In both his stand-up performances, and during interviews, he often criticized media and popular culture as oppressive tools of the ruling class, meant to “keep people stupid and apathetic.” An inspired and inspiring truth teller, dangerous and brave and scary all at once. Richard Pryor Hickss stand-up act is about taking a stand and occasionally dodging a chair. Rolling Stone Savage, brilliant, funny, tremendously intelligent. John Cleese He never disappointed. David Letterman Bill Hicksblowtorch, excavator, truth-sayer, and brain specialist, like a reverend waving a gun around. He will correct your vision. Others will drive on the road he built. thank you so much for uploading this! Bill Hicks = Legend
@fowdogg18 yea he was so ahead that his parents haven’t met yet ;]
@deftox This is Austin. Austin isn’t really Texas
ungammer is blind, this guy is a prophet.
“Dirt For Sale. How’d you like to get inside that guys mind and look around an hour.” hahaha lol lmfao
@umgammer So, who do you think is important ?
@johnditmo the definition of comedian is the problem with this. but “all humor is a civilized way of dealing with hostility” sigmund frued. the funniest people are the ones who show the largest vying forces, so these large vying forces need discription, because people are dumbed down alot because “we let demons run a’muck” bill hicks. his “philosophy” is also a joke, to laugh and think. they are one and the same, when done right. also why carlin and bruce broke the trivial mainstream mold
Thanks for posting this. This is the finest stand-up video ever made.
I think its diffucult to truly attach hicks to carlin, and as a major George fan i think he was a brilliant observer like hicks but i personally think hicks had a more intense love for his audience, otherwise why would he get so angry at them?
Ill tell you it was because he wanted to shake their heads out .
What you readin’ for?
Well I read for a lot of reasons, but I guess the main one is so I dont end up being a fucking waffle waitress.
Hahahahahahahahahaha!
@ddd1600 Because majority of America can’t STOMACH the honest truth!
@TheMillsEffect i would call hicks and carlin philosophers disguised as comedians or just really good bullshit detectors lol
well the thing about this guy is that the majority of america can’t STOMACH him!
@leshager2009 yeah leary is a hack he somehow has managed to take brilliant material and make it fall on it’s face like a badass guitar in the hands of a amature
what you describe is what I don’t understand about America. I’m from Croatia (small European country) and all my friends have at least heard of Bill Hicks or George Carlin. I mean you don’t have castles and ancient cities like we do, but people like Bill Hicks are integral part of you culture, yet you neglect them. I know your public education sucks, our sucks also, but people also educate themselves, they read, explore music, download good movies from torrentz…
ahh yes, “SANE MAN”..the blueprint from which DENIS LEARY stole all his material for his “NO CURE FOR CANCER” mess.
The people around here have never even heard of George Carlin. I have one friend who has heard of both Carlin and Hicks but then again he is really into Tool so that’s how he got into Bill Hicks. Then he wanted to know about more edgy comedy so he discovered George Carlin. Living in Alabama isn’t too bad because I live in the middle of nowhere. Take away the hillbillies and the inbreeding(no joke, inbreeding does happen in this great state!) and it would be better.
yeah i’d bet it would suck to grow up in an area like that. I’m from detroit and i thought growing up around a bunch of idiot assembly line workers was bad. I can just imagine being myself and having to put up with people who think Larry the Cable Guy is funnier than George Carlin
That’s what I’ve always been amazed by too. How he was from Texas, lived in Alabama and Georgia for a short time and yet the crowds in those states could actually get a laugh from seeing him. By the way I am from Northeast Alabama, near Fyffe, which he mentioned in Relentless. I get sick when people my age(17) don’t know who he is and have never heard of him. The only comedians(and I use that term loosely) that people in my area have heard of is Larry the Cable guy and Jeff Foxworthy.
it’s amazing how he could get a laugh on some of his anti-redneck jokes while in TX. i know bill was from the south but that’s a tough crowd who doesn’t like to be made fun of
Love him!
I just think their message of “wake the fuck” up is more important than your message of “who really cares?”
Yes I realize he did do it for laughs as well. But as you point out in some of your posts, he did have a message to get across too.
So why are you here, replying to every comment?
I don’t know what to say at this point. I don’t think your favorite comedian is as important as you do, it’s that simple.
