i find it strange that Coyne doesnt believe that souls exist but he believes that humans get an afterlife while animals dont. i’m a christian and i believe in evolution but i think its either all organisms get an afterlife or noone does except if god gave souls to humans
i’m an atheist, but I think this guy should be pope
In the same way there must have been an animal thatfirst had consciouness or self awareness, or a sense of morality and there is no scientific evidence, becuase you can’t quantify a created subjective truth like morality or consciousness, but is clearly something that is instrinic and true about human existence. Is it then too much of a strech to imagine a spririt of equal indescriable nature was emerged in a being or was cultivated?
systems of control
@cronicadelojo Dawkins was interviewing rather than Debating. In debates one has to be arrogant so as to assert one’s argument.
@mjperen
very peaceful debate indeed,
however,at one point 8:25,when Dawkins thought it was the end of the interview, he went to finish if with few provocative questions.Similar to what journalists do,at first they are friendly and polite to get one to talking, and once they got what they came for and one is no longer needed, they throw some vulgar remarks just to leave u feeling rotten, burn in hell dawkins
Both very smart men- and I’m glad its not a debate where Dawkins gets all snotty. Coyne’s logic does seem strange at times during the course of the interview though- you can really sense his scientific and religious sides wrestling with each other. Overall I think both sides can co-exist, just with a little bit of respect!
after the pope sees this interview, george will be defrocked
@wlwak That’s what he can’t explain..nor can I…just like when carl sagan asked him why was he born with faith and carl wasn’t…it just happens that way, but it’s not to say that one who does not have it now won’t have it in the future, fascinating interview I must say.
@gombis666 I think trying to find the god of love would turn people to atheism even faster unless they have blinders on ofcourse. Just think of all the pain and suffering in this world. It should be pretty clear that we are all there is to it and we’re still animals etc.
This priest made the miracle: the arrogant Dawkings disappeared and was substituted with a humble and respectful man, defending his point but unable to demolish the strange truth of the soul. Religion and science, are different entities and it is wonderful to see, at least for one time, both sides in a peaceful exchange of ideas…
Even though I do not agree with Dawkins in terms of religion, I respect him as he has a questioning sort of demeanor and is not afraid to argue with religious figures. (who most of people see as a somewhat higher authority) and question old age traditions. However, to me he does not come off as disrespectful or even rude to most religious figures and trying not to force feed them his skepitical beliefs but he try’s to understand why these people believe in what they do.
Interesting that Dawkins lost his faith because he was looking for a God “of explanation” and that this may be why some lose their faith. But if we go back to the argument Coyne was making, we should be looking for the God of Love and not of Explanation. Great video!
God needs the control of preachers to spread the word of God. Just like a school has a principal that spreads the fear of being punished if you miss-behave. If we all equally had the athority of a God, preacher, principal we wouldn’t need one. We do posess this ability, it’s called being human*.
What amazes me it that Coyne belongs to the order (the S.I.) that vehemently opposed the Jansenites (e.g. Antoine Arnauld, Pierre Nicole, Blaise Pascal, Jean Racine, among others) and which order (the S.I.) was the driving force to have Jansenism declared heretic, I suppose, therefore, that Coyne will not because cannot not equate efficacious grace with intelligence as it would question the essence of his faith.
A pity, nonetheless, that the Coynes of the RC church aren’t more often heard.
so he says god could not have predicted things to turn out this way? whaaaaat? i thought he knew everything, created everything, and has a plan already laid out for us like a movie script. how could he not know anything?
considering a wasted 700 hours playing Killzone 2. I could have learned 5 times as much as you in that time
No my country believed in the norse gods. Thor Odin and others. Why don’t we get educated about the stories of Thor fighing the midgard’s serpent. Instead of listening to how jesus walked on water? It’s the same thing, it’s fantasy. Why don’t we have a subject called “Lord of the rings”. Because it’s bullshit, it’s beautiful but it’s not true. People should be able to choose if they want to read it or not. But their brainwashed parents don’t want them to get to hell. Teching religion is idiotic
erm, was your country always atheistic? No so i dont see your premise standing…
95% of the population of my country are atheist. Religion isn’t a part of every society. And also, why do we have to teach our children fairytales. Because that is what religion is. Just fantasies about how the world was created without any evidence at all. Religion is a disease…and no one should spread it.
erm, if we follow your premise then the teaching of any art, social science in school are all useless for they are all rooted in the foundations of society and religion itself being one of them.
A religious belief is a part of a society’s structrure and i believe you should study not only the religions themselves but rather a bit more on culture…
Elen síla lúmenn’ omentielvo.
Totally with you
subject you mean…well it’s the same thing. If people would believe in the world created by JRR tolkien it would have been a religion. Now why don’t we switch out christianity to lord of the rings. There is a epic movie we can use to study too. Just saying that it’s a waste of time learning these fairytales in school.
@Hermoor Yay! Lord of the Rings in class as a theme! I’d have loved the theme as a teen
Now i have had about 100 hours of education in all of the big religions. And I know quite much about them. The point I’m trying to make is that learning that kind of stuff in school isn’t important. Why not switch out christianity with Lord of the rings? It’s the same thing, we need to site 100 hours and learn all that to understand what idiots believe in. Well why do we have to know what they believe in, so we can tell them they are wrong? They won’t listen..so is there a reason?
