What? Hitchens without liquor? Well, I’ll be….wait, there it is.
As someone who recently went through american (Michigan) schooling, I disagree with Hitchens’s first answer. They teach you the untrue bullshit for the first few years, then correct it later.
Wanting to have bookcases arranged like that must be a psychoneuroses.
Damn Hitchens you cheap bastard, get a damn Library Shelf before all those books come tumbling down!
@masterb403
you can be both you know

Certainly a far greater mind than Peter, the little bit of slime that crawled out after him. But although I broadly agree with him ideologically I don’t by his construction of this ‘Man of Enlightenment’ self image.. he’s far too arrogant to fit that mould. There’s something untrustworthy, or at least egotistical, about him.
LOL, his anglo american bias comes out when he throws in “federal” just to exclude France as the only other secular democrat republic.
@bigjstokes
Well yeah, i understood it to mean economics too–but it’s even more bizarre. He’s a political anaylst. How can he not know economics and know only foreign policy?
@regelemihai He, like myself, is probably dumbfounded by modern economics. Perhaps he was too shy or embarrassed to say “economics”.
I enjoyed his criticism of libertarianism.
lol what happens when he needs one of those books from the bottom of the stack?
fffffuuuuuuu
@fubintien I think that particular battle in India is of great importance because if you drew a straight line starting from Maghreb to the South China Sea, it is the only secular democracy (at least constitutionally) that you will intersect. And its fragile secularism is being threatened by the twin forces of Islamic terror and Hindutva, a system of Hindu fascism
@vikramkrishnan It is indeed a constant battle, my friend. Of course it goes without saying that India is truly a beacon for secularism in a very difficult part of the world. I agree with the Hitch’s sentiments elsewhere that the US needs to embrace friendship with India in a much more concrete way.
@fubintien True. I must concede that. In my home country of India, attempts to devise a uniform civil code have been stymied for a long time by special interest groups.
@vikramkrishnan Forgot what? France still has a hand in appointing Catholic bishops, and it owns (and uses tax dollars to maintain) all Churches built before 1905. India officially recognizes that Sharia law takes precedence over its constitution with regards to Muslims. Shall I go on?
@vikramkrishnan there are other times when he talks about India’s importance. It was the one where he talks with Zbig Brzinzinsky (w/e his name is)
seen a funny interview of the british parties for the elections. the opposition argued that it was terrible that the labour party brought crime down but that the fear of crime was at an all time high. terrible silliness of british problems
Driving their country into bankruptcy? Visions of imperialism? It sounds like he is talking about the United States.
Why does he put “political economy” under the category of things that he doesn’t know?( 17:40) I get the hard sciences stuuf like anthropology and biology, but this?
@SpiralOutLateralus lol its like oh shit I need one from the bottom!
Who stacks books like that? Awesome.
‘Only secular democratic republic’ Hitch, you forgot India and France
@johnd94 He’s like the atheistic journalist version of Ron White, I love it
I suspect that Iran, if indeed it is attempting to acquire nuclear weapons, is endeavoring to do so as a paltry counterbalance to Israel’s accumilation of 200-300 such bombs. Fortunately Iran will never be a threat to the USA because, at any rate, it maintains thousands. BTW: Americans want health care, however we don’t wish it to be state sponsored, although it is coming, and in spades!
