Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry- Guardian Hay Festival: the Blasphemy Debate, chaired by Joan Bakewell

two of my idols. (not in a religous way obviously)
“I have set WATCHmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence…” Isaiah 62:6
JOEL 2:1 “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand” MAY 21 2011 THE RAPTURE & JUDGMENT DAY , OCT 21 THE END OF THE WORLD! @vesiu5
Who is the arbiter of bad religion? it can’t be god because he has let so much slide previously, why change the habit of all eternity. I know who the arbiter of bad science is, the scientists who try and replicate the erroneous theory, that’s why bad science doesn’t last that long. Could you say the same for bad religion, it seems to have lasted far too long already.
@vesiu5 Shit man, why didn’t you say that at the start? – It completely refutes everything I’ve said – My argument is destroyed, I guess I’ll just have to get to church and seek god’s forgiveness
@richybinns We all fail, Rich, not religion. When a doctor kills his patient, now medicine is to blame? Where nuclear physicists cause Chernobyl, now science is responsible, right? We both can admit our failings. Again, its childish to blame the faults of humans on the institution. Pol Pot, Challenger, and Vioxx is bad science. The Crusades, the Inquisition, and the Galileo incident is bad religion. Good science and good religion are not to blame for our ignorance.
@6kuku9 I did read it 6COOCKOO6. Your name says it all.
@WiseMansHeart and you will be goddamn suprised i really hope you live that long i hope you ignorant fucks do say we can laugh in your face when your pathetic asses are still hear on this planet i suspect many MANY religious people will commit suicide that day because they CANNOT except TRUTH
I could imagine having dinner with these two…they go off on wonderfully sarcastic tangents like me and most of the close friends.
Stephen Fry and Christopher Hitchens… this is too awesome.
@Kaos77Kisame : Your point of view would be valid if we both agreed there was an actual god. You are asking me to believe that you believe… can’t do it.
@bersa888 The second is that God does what is ultimately good for us, and he knows our greatest need is spiritual and not physical, which is why materialism (an unproven viewpoint) tends to focus on the famines and the disasters. Yes, they are terrible and painful, don’t get me wrong, but God knows that it is not our greatest need, and that our greatest need is to re-establish a relationship with him, because that is the difference between heaven and hell, God’s love or God’s wrath.
@bersa888
Let me have a crack then. Fry stated that he finds it hard to believe in a benevolent God, and looking at the world, it is very easy to see why he would come to that conclusion. But I have two answers to that. The first is that the world is in its current state because we screwed up. Adam (who essentially represents the rest if us) disobeyed God and caused the fall. After the fall, everything began to break, including nature, which explains why some creatures feed on and plague others.
@faithisfiction You mean they have the final word? Ridiculous, unenlightened.
I think christianity as a personal thing can do good….but it must be kept in doors and not interfere with other religion types. Some religions tend to have that aggressive approach which has cost them so many followers in the first place.
I do not believe and I am glad for it, but we all need to respect each other.
Religion needs to be a discussable topic, for there is a lot that is simply wrong *after all we are mankind, we do stupid things all the time…
Interesting
Read the problem of Evil by Henri Blocher.
@yermomsboxx It falls far short of expectation. Hitchens and Fry rule it. Anne Widdicombe is on the other side, along with a Catholic clergyman.
I would like to hear the other side of this debate.
@p90goldtop
I apologise if that sounded like an insult but come on, seriously……..a turd is a turd no matter who well its wrapped, and all the good books of the monotheisms try to give the impression of being well wrapped.
@p90goldtop
Oh mate, I’ve read the convergence of revelatory scripture and science and I must say I’m surprised they took the time to write such a closed and circulatory argument for the existence of god/gods. This is just an opinion and as well all know “opinions are like arseholes; we’ve all got one, and some stink” But a bigger pile of crap just doesn’t exist, I’d like to add that theists using science to explain religion really does grind my gears, stick to what you know best, fairies.
Amazing how the religious people watching this have offered absolutely nothing that even remotely comes close to explain or excuse their pathetic and antiquated beliefs and doctrines. Nothing but buffoons of the human intellect…
@Conail23
Apologies for that.
Remove Galileo from my statement and my statement remains relevant. Ok, replace Galileo with say, Abraham Lincoln or Thomas Edison then.
I don’t look at everything with an anti-christian bias, it’s just that I believe religion does more harm than good. People have done evil things because of their religion, but a non-believer won’t do an evil thing because of their non-belief.
Inspiring fear in non-believers does nothing to help the image of your cause.
Don’t judge IT by established religion’s description of it. We create our own reality so don’t blame the universe for what we have done, YES even Tsunamis and Earthquakes are OUR doing. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
@richybinns No they didn’t make it up, they just left out the relevant scientific evidence. Do your research and find which books of the bible were left out, the ones that happen to coincide with the recent discoveries in quantum theory. Check out the ancient writings that have been buried underneath tons of misinformation. When you have it all before you replace all the spooky religious terms with their modern counterparts and you may have a glimpse of the truth.
@VermilionUK who on earth told you Galileo was a nonbeliever, he defied the catholic church, so what? Millions of Christians defied the ROman Cult, but he was a Christian, you need to study history & stop looking at everything with such an atheist, anti-Christian bias.
